About Paralysis Patient - Paras Bhai

  • Name: Paras Bhai
  • Age: 42 years
  • Location: Ahmedabad, India
  • Profession: Business

How he got Paralyzed ?

Paras bhai was affected with paralysis not of a sudden event, but it was a result of severe spinal condition. Initially, he was suffered with partial paraplegia and this condition quickly converted within few days into a complete paralysis from the waist down.

He suffered quick deterioration and it was because of a underlying issue affected his spine and nervous system. Medical reports such as MRI and pathology lab report revealed that He had extensive damage to intervertebral disc space and adjacent vertebral bodies.

Doctors also found that multiple spinal elements were also destroyed, and which leads to structural instability and problems in the spine. Doctor also found that a vertebra in his cervical spine had completely eroded and it was also infected and filled with pus.

Due to this condition, the spinal cord was getting compressed and it was finally diagnosed as spine tuberculosis. It is a serious condition which damages the spinal structure and leads to complications such as paralysis or paraplegia.

Because of the spinal cord infection, it has weakened the spinal column and also affected nerve signals. Within few days, Paras bhai lost his ability to move his legs completely. Doctors suggested surgical decompression of the spinal cord as only chance of recovery.

The Emergency Paralysis Surgery on 9th Nov 2023

On 9th November 2023, Paras bhai underwent Surgical decompression of the spinal cord surgery. The surgery was very complex because he had higher body weight and which made it difficult for spine surgeons to access the affected spinal region.

Even with these challenges, the team of spine surgeons at Zydus Hospitals, Ahmedabad, able to do a successful spine surgery and within 24 hours, Paras bhai showed early signs of recovery as he regained slight mobility in his toes.

After the surgery, doctors advised him to be bedridden for 25 days and perform very limited movement and dependency.

Challenges after Spine surgery

After the Spine surgery is done, Paras bhai needed a careful management of his condition to support the recovery from paralysis.

His body became weak, the metabolism was slow, and he was also dealing with multiple health issues at the same time.

Doctors also suggested him to do a bariatric surgery to lose his weight. However, he opted for a different path with guidance from paralysis specialist dietitian Dt. Foram Modi.

Below are various challenges he faced after paralysis spine surgery in Ahmedabad, India.

  • Post-surgical immobility: Limited movement affected muscle strength and metabolism
  • High body weight (149.4 kg): Increased pressure on spine and recovery process
  • Long-term TB medication: Affected digestion and overall health
  • BP issues: Required regular medication
  • Severe constipation and vertigo
  • Mental stress: Loss of independence and mobility
