7 Parts of Human Digestive System

Human’s digestive system main work is to breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste from the body.Ā

To achieve these goals, the digestive system takes help from connected 7 organs, that work together to support your body.Ā

These main parts form a continuous tube known as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. And then there are accessory organs in your digestive system which helps in digestion. As Dietitian Foram Modi often emphasizes, “A healthy gut is the foundation of overall wellness.”

  • Mouth – The starting point where mechanical (chewing) and chemical (saliva) digestion begins.

  • Esophagus – A muscular tube that transports food from the mouth to the stomach using rhythmic contractions called peristalsis.

  • Stomach – A sac-like organ that mixes food with digestive juices, including acid and enzymes, to break it down into a semi-liquid form.

  • Small Intestine – The longest part of the digestive system, where most nutrient absorption occurs with the help of enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver.

  • Large Intestine (Colon) – Absorbs water and electrolytes from the remaining indigestible food and compacts it into stool.

  • Rectum – The final section of the large intestine where stool is stored before being eliminated.

  • Anus – The opening at the end of the digestive tract through which stool leaves the body during a bowel movement.

Physiology of Digestive System

If you want to understand, the physiology of the digestive system, thenĀ  involves mechanical and chemical digestion, absorption, and elimination processes. It begins in the mouth, where food is chewed and mixed with saliva.Ā

After that, it is moved down from the esophagus into the stomach. In stomach ,acids and enzymes break down the food into a semi-liquid form. This is a partially digested food. It then enters the small intestine, where most nutrient absorption occurs.Ā

Digestive enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver helps during this process. The remaining waste moves into the large intestine, where water and electrolytes are absorbed. This is a fairly complex system which needs a balanced diet and hydration.Ā

As per gut expert nutritionist – Dt. Foram Modi, understanding the physiology of the digestive system helps us shape a diet that works with your body, not against it. Here’s how your diet should be tailored to support efficient digestion:

  • Eat small, frequent meals: This prevents overwhelming the digestive system and allows for steady nutrient absorption.

  • Include fiber-rich foods: Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes keep the intestines moving and support gut health.

  • Stay hydrated: Water aids in the breakdown of food and the absorption of nutrients, and prevents constipation.

  • Chew food thoroughly: Digestion starts in the mouth. Proper chewing reduces the load on your stomach.
